Last week's coup in Albany was completely a Western New York operation, with Buffalo Sabres owner and three-time gubernatorial candidate Tom Golisano and his political consultant Steve Pigeon enlisting state Sen. George Maziarz and others to end the Democrats' brief reign in the state Senate. The party's control of the body shifted when two New York City Dems, Pedro Espada and Hiram Monserrate, switched their allegiance, announcing before a visibly shaken Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith that they would now caucus with the Republicans and calling for an immediate leadership vote.
